January

  • January 1 Alexandria, Egypt: A bomb outside a Coptic Orthodox church, where worshippers gathered to celebrate mass on New Year's Eve killed 21 and injured 97 others.
  • January 1 Narathiwat, Thailand: Following warnings of New Year violence two bomb disposal police officers were killed after a street vendor alerted police about a suspicious motorcycle parked by two teenagers.
  • January 1 Southern Afghanistan: An ISAF personnel was killed in an explosion.
  • January 2, Incendiary bomb Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada: Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Burnaby, B.C said a morning explosion at a community centre was intentionally caused by an incendiary device. No deaths or injuries were reported but the doorway to the centre received damage and several bricks in the front were knocked off.
  • January 2 Targeted shootings Baghdad, Iraq: Suspected insurgents killed four members of Iraq’s security forces and a city engineer. All shootings were similar in using silencers and occurred within an hour of each, which suggested a coordinated campaign against security officials and government workers. No one immediately claimed responsibility.
  • January 3 Suicide car Bombing Baquba, Iraq: A security intelligence office was targeted by a suicide car bomber. One person was killed in the blast and fifteen people were injured, including ten shoolchildren whose bus was driving by when it was struck by the blast. Three of the injured were in a serious condition.
  • January 4 IED Turbat, Balochistan, Pakistan: A bus carrying children of paramilitary soldiers was attacked, resulting in fifteen children being injured, five of them seriously and the rest discharged from hospital on the same day. The bus was escorted by two military vehicles, though neither of those were hit. No one has claimed responsibility, though Balo nationalist groups were active in the area.
  • January 4 Shooting Islamabad, Pakistan: Salman Taseer, a high ranking member of the Pakistani's Prime Minister's party and governor of the Punjab province was shot and killed by his bodyguard as he stepped out of his car in Islamabad. It is believed he was assassinated for his opposition to Pakistan's blasphemy law.
  • January 5 Attempted plane hijacking Oslo/Istanbul: A Turkish-speaking man wearing a mask demanded that the Turkish Airlines flight return to Oslo and threatened to blow up the plane. On arrival in Istanbul police arrested the man.
  • January 5 Bombs Southern and eastern Afghanistan: As Afghan National Army begun Operation Omid leading supportive ISAF forces, the Defence Ministry announced two bombs killed three civilians, including a UN worker, and a soldier.
  • January 5 Bombing and shooting Bamako, Mali: A suspected Al Qaeda militant tossed an explosive device at the French Embassay in Mali and the explosive device hit a sentry post. The suspect was injured and arrested by private security after one of them was shot and another received burns from the explosion.
  • January 7 Suicide bombing Spin Boldak, Kandahar, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber attacked a public bathhouse, killing 16 and injuring 20. Zalmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the governor, said it targeted a border police commander who was bathing at the time of the attack.
  • January 7 Ambush shooting Lawdar, Abyan, Yemen: 15 suspected Al Qaeda gunmen ambushed army vehicles that were escorting a lorry with food supplies to an army base using rocket-propelled grenades.
  • January 7 Shooting Near the Gaza border, Israel: Two armed men crossed the buffer zone between the Gaza Strip before opening fire on soldiers.
  • January 7 Letter bombings Hanover, Annapolis, United States: The first letter bomb to explode was in a mailroom of the Department of Transport headquarters in the city of Hanover. One hour later another letter bomb exploded inside a building in the city of Annapolis. No one was killed but one person was wounded in the blasts.
  • January 8 Rocket Near the Gaza border, Israel: A rocket fired from Gaza hit a farm near the border injuring two Thai agricultural workers. Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
  • January 9 Rockets Near the Gaza border, Israel: Three rockets fired from Gaza hit the Ashkelon region.
  • January 10 Ambush Kurdufan, Sudan: During the Southern Sudan independence referendum, 2011 fighters from the Misseriya ambushed 11 people on their way to vote.
  • January 14 Car bomb Khasavyurt, Dagestan, Russia: A car bomb explosion ripped through a cafe, with the blast killing and injuring both cafe workers and customers within the city of Khasavyurt, which is located within the volatile southern Russian republic of Dagestan.
  • January 17 Bomb Derry, Northern Ireland: A bomb exploded at Guildhall Square in the centre of Derry. No one was killed or injured in the blast and the bomb caused some damage to buildings in the area.
  • January 17 Bombing attempt Spokane, Washington: A bomb was defused in the city of Spokane. No one was killed or injured in the incident.
  • January 18 Attempted Letter bombing Berlin, Germany: A letter bomb was sent to the Croatian embassy in Berlin. It was made safe before it could explode and cause damage or injury.
  • January 19 Suicide bombing Baquba, Iraq: A suicide bomber used an ambulance as a van bomb to attack a police compound in Baquba killing 14 and injuring over 60.
  • January 19 Bombing Feni District, Bangladesh: A bomb exploded on a bus in Feni District. No one was killed, but five people were wounded in the blast.
  • January 20 Car bombing Karbala, Iraq Two car bombs exploded in Karbala killing 45 people and wounding 135. Most of them were pilgrims commemorating the Shia Muslim festival of Arbaeen.
  • January 20 Bombing Makiivka, Ukraine: Two bombs exploded in the city of Makiivka. The first bomb exploded at 4:40pm near a shopping mall. The second bomb exploded one hour later next to the entrance to the state enterprise Makeevugol. No one was killed or injured in the blasts, but damage was caused to the state enterprise Makeevugol building.
  • January 21 Bombing attempted Belfast, Northern Ireland: A bomb was found at Queen's University Officers' Training Corps in Belfast. The bomb was made safe before it could explode and cause any damage or injury.
  • January 23 Car Bombing Baghdad, Iraq: Five car bombs exploded in Baghdad, killing six and wounding 30 people.
  • January 24 Bombing Karbala, Iraq: Two bombs exploded killing 25 and wounding 57. The first blast struck a bus carrying terminal filled with buses carrying pilgrims to Karbala. The second blast hit the southern outskirts of the city.
  • January 24 Suicide bombing Moscow, Russia: A suicide bomber attacked Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport killing 35 people and wounding 130 more.
  • January 25 Suicide Bombing Lahore, Karachi, Pakistan: Two suicide bombers targeted Shia Muslims in Lahore and Karachi killing 15 and wounding 50 people.
  • January 25 Bombing Manila, Philippines: A bomb exploded on a bus in the city of Manila killing four people and wounding 15 more people.
  • January 25 Car Bombing attempt/Bombing attempt Belfast, Northern Ireland: A number of controlled explosions was carried out on a car bomb that was parked near Antrim Road police station in north Belfast. A second bomb was also found next to a shop on the same road that was also made safe. Three phone calls were made about where the car bomb was. Over 50 people were removed from their homes because of the alert. The group called Óglaigh nah Éireann claimed responsibility for the car bomb.
  • January 25 Bombing/Derailment Dima Hasao district, India: A bomb derailed a freight train after exploding under a bridge in Dima Hasao district between Tripura and Mizoram. No one was killed or injured, but the bridge was damaged in the bombing.
  • January 26 Attempted Pipe Bombing Carnlough, Northern Ireland: A pipe bomb was found in the village of Carnlough. The bomb was made safe before it could explode and was taken away for further investigation. The group calling itself Loyalist Action Force claimed responsibility for the bomb.
  • January 27 Car bombing Baghdad, Iraq: A car bomb exploded near a funeral in Baghdad. The bombing killed 30 people and wounded 50 more.
  • January 27 Car bombing Khasavyurt, Russia: A car bomb exploded outside a cafe in the city of Khasavyurt killing four and wounding six people.
  • January 28 Shooting/Suicide Bombing Kabul, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber blew himself up after the bomber opened fire on people in a supermarket in the city of Kabul. The attack killed 8 people.
  • January 30 Pipe Bomb Lakeland, Tennessee, United States of America: A pipe bomb explodes behind a house, severely injuring one man's foot in the blast.
  • February

  • February 1 Suicide Bombing Peshawar, Pakistan: Six people were killed and 18 more wounded after two suicide bombers attacked the city of Peshawar.
  • February 2 Car bomb Peshawar, Pakistan: A car bomb exploded near a police station in the city of Peshawar killing 9 and wounding 20 people.
  • February 2 Attempted Letter bomb Athens, Greece: A letter bomb was sent to the justice ministry in Athens. Police destroyed the bomb before it could cause any damage or injury.
  • February 3 Car bombing/suicide bombing Ramadi, Iraq: A car bomb and a suicide bomber attacked the city of Ramadi killing 8 and wounding 15 people.
  • February 3 Bombing Puerto Rondón, Tame, Colombia: The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia exploded a bomb as soldiers were on route to defuse a car bomb in the town of Neiva. The blast, which happened between the two towns of Puerto Rondón and Tame, wounded 30 soldiers.
  • February 4 Bombing Lahore, Pakistan: A bomb exploded in the city of Lahore killing one person and wounding 24 more people.
  • February 5 Bombing Rafah, Gaza Strip: A bomb exploded next to a church in the town of Rafah. No one was killed or injured in the blast, but it did damage to the church.
  • February 5 Pipe Bombing Thessaloniki, Greece: A pipe bomb exploded next to a building in the city of Thessaloniki. No one was killed or injured in the blast but did the building and a number of cars were damaged.
  • February 5 Car Bombing Khyber Agency, Pakistan: Three people were killed and two were wounded after a car bomb exploded in the village of Barqambarkhel which is in Khyber Agency.
  • February 5 Car Bombing/Bombing Samarra, Iraq:16 people were wounded after two bombs exploded in the city of Samarra. Most of the people that were wounded were Shiite pilgrims. The first bomb was a car bomb which exploded at a bus station and the second bomb exploded next to a bus carrying pilgrims.
  • February 8 Attempted Bike Bombing Belfast, Northern Ireland: A booby trapped bomb was attached to a child's bike in north Belfast. The bomb was made safe before it could explode. Three men were arrested hours later by police.
  • February 9 Suicide Car Bombing Kirkuk, Iraq: Three suicide car bombers exploded in the city of Kirkuk killing eight people and wounding 67 more. The first bomb exploded as a police patrol passed the car bomb. The second car bomb exploded at a checkpoint for the headquarters for Kurdish intelligence. The the third car bomb exploded near the compound.
  • February 9 Bombing Jalalabad, Afghanistan: A bomb exploded outside a university in the city of Jalalabad. The blast struck a passing bus causing 2 people to be injured.
  • February 10 Suicide Bombing Mardan, Pakistan: A suicide bomber between the age of 10 or 12 blew himself up at an army compound in the city of Mardan killing 31.
  • February 12 Bombing/Attempted Train Derailment Sindh, Pakistan: Three bombs exploded on railways tracks in Karachi, Hyderabad and Nawabshah and wounded two people.
  • February 12 Suicide Bombing Samarra, Iraq: A suicide bomber blew himself up next to a bus carrying Shia pilgrims in the city of Samarra killing 48 and injuring 80.
  • February 12 Suicide Bombing/Car Bombing/Shooting/Rocket Kandahar, Afghanistan: The Taliban attacked the police HQ in the city of Kandahar. There were two suicide bombers and a car bomb exploded near the building as gun fire and a rocket struck the building. The attack killed 15 and wounded 49 more.
  • February 12 Bombing/Attempted Derailment Oranienburg, Germany: Two bombs were found and defused by police. The bombs were planted on two rail signals in the town of Oranienburg.
  • February 13 Car Bombing Yala, Thailand: A car bomb exploded outside a bank in the city of Yala. The bombing caused the bank and some shops to catch fire. The blast injured 18 people.
  • February 14 Suicide Bombing Makhachkala, Russia: A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a police station in the city of Makhachkala killing one officer and wounding seven more.
  • February 17 Car Bombing Muqdadiyah, Iraq: 13 people were killed and 30 wounded after a car bomb exploded in the city of Muqdadiyah. The car bomb exploded outside a car sales centre.
  • February 17 Pipe bombing attempted Terre Haute, Indiana: A pipe bomb was left outside the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in the city of Terre Haute. The bomb was made safe before it could explode and cause any damage or injury.
  • February 18 Suicide Bombing/Car Bombing Khost, Afghanistan: A suicide car bomber blow himself up at a police checkpoint in the city Khost killing 11 people.
  • February 19 Suicide Bombing Jalalabad, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber blow himself up outside a bank in the city of Jalalabad killing 8 and wounding 70 people.
  • February 21 Car Bombing/Suicide Bombing Mogadishu, Somalia: A suicide car bomber exploded outside a police station in Mogadishu killing 8 and wounding 35 more.
  • February 24 Suicide Bombing Ramadi, Iraq: A suicide bomber exploded at a cultural centre in the city of Ramadi killing 8 and wounding 15.
  • February 25 Attempted Bombing Hove, England: A bomb was found outside a restaurant in the town of Hove. The bomb was made safe by a bomb disposal team before it could explode.
  • March

  • March 2 Shooting Frankfurt, Germany: A gunman opened fire on a bus carrying American military personnel at Frankfurt Airport killing two and wounding two more servicemen.
  • March 2 Ambush Derry, Northern Ireland The Real IRA were behind a attack on PSNI officers. Shots were fired at the officers in the city of Derry as they were patrolling the area of Glen Road for a stolen car. The car was found on Glen Road and was about to be taken away when the gunman opened fire. No one was killed or injured in the attack.
  • March 2 Ambush Caloto, Colombia: A gunman opened fire on a helicopter delivering money to a local bank on landing at Caloto. The attack killed six—four police officers and two bystanders—and wounded 8 people.
  • March 3 Suicide Bombing Haditha, Iraq: A suicide bomber blew himself up at a bank in the town of Haditha killing 9 and wounding 8 more people.
  • March 3 Bombing Abuja, Nigeria: A bomb exploded during a political meeting in the city of Abuja. The blast killed three and 21 people were wounded.
  • March 4 Bombing Antananarivo, Madagascar A homemade bomb exploded missing a convoy on the highway in the city of Antananarivo. The blast caused no damage.
  • March 4 Bombing Naushera, Pakistan: A bomb exploded at a mosque in the village of Naushera killing 9 and wounding 30 people.
  • March 6 Pipe Bombing Jerusalem, Israel: A pipe bomb exploded in the city of Jerusalem, wounding one person.
  • March 8 Car Bombing Faisalabad, Pakistan: A car bomb exploded at a gas station in the city of Faisalabad killing 20 people and wounding 120. The bombing caused a number of cars and buildings to be destroyed.
  • March 9 Bombing Djelfa, Algeria: A bomb exploded in the city of Djelfa hitting a vehicle killing five people.
  • March 9 Bombing Moscow, Russia: A bomb exploded at a bus shelter near Moscow's FSB secret police academy. No one was killed or injured in the blast but three cars and the bus stop itself were damaged.
  • March 10 Bombing Jolo, Philippines: A bomb exploded outside a school in the city of Jolo on Jolo island. The blast killed 3 and wounded 9 more people.
  • March 11 Pipe Bombing Belfast, Northern Ireland: A DUP candidate's house was damaged in a pipe bomb blast after it was thrown through the window of the house. No one was killed or injured in the blast.
  • March 23 Bombing Jerusalem, Israel: A bomb exploded at a bus stop in Jerusalem killing one and wounding 39 people.
  • March 29 Attempted Car Bombing Derry, Northern Ireland: A 200 hundred pound car bomb was defused outside a courthouse on Bishop Street in Derry.
  • March 31 Attempted Bombing Dortmund, Germany: Three bombs were found and made safe outside of the Dortmund football stadium. No one was killed or injured in the incident. A 25 year old man was arrested an hour later.
  • April

  • April 1 Letter Bombing Olten, Switzerland: Two people were injured after a letter bomb exploded inside one of the Swiss nuclear agencies in the town of Olten.
  • April 1 Letter Bombing Livorno, Italy: A letter bomb exploded after being opened at an army barracks in Tuscan port within the city of Livorno. The blast injured one person.
  • April 2 Bombing Omagh, Northern Ireland: A 25 year old PSNI officer was killed after a bomb exploded under his car outside his house in the town of Omagh. No one has claimed responsibility but dissident republicans are being blamed for the attack.
  • April 3 Suicide Bombings Punjab, Pakistan: Two suicide bombers exploded at a Sakhi Sarwar shrine in Punjab killing 50 and injuring 120 others people.
  • April 9 Attempted Van bombing Newry, Northern Ireland: A 500 lb van bomb was left on a Belfast to Dublin road near Newry. The bomb failed to explode and the army made the bomb safe.
  • April 9 Shooting Valliere, France: Two ETA members opened fire on a gendarme at a police checkpoint in the town of Valliere after they refused to stop. A gun battle broke out with the gunmen. They were arrested by police the following day. No one was killed or injured in the incident.
  • April 11 Bombing Minsk, Belarus: Two bombs exploded at two at a metro station in Minsk killing 15 and wounding 204.
  • April 15 Suicide Bombing Cirebon, Indonesia: A suicide bomber exploded his bomb in a mosque in the city of Cirebon. The bomber was killed and at least 28 people were injured.
  • April 18 Car bombing Pattani, Thailand: Suspected Muslim insurgents set off a car bomb that killed one soldier and wounded 25 people in the southern Thailand town of Pattani.
  • April 24 Attempted plane hijacking Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Italy: Alitalia Flight AZ329, an Airbus A321, was flying from Paris to Rome when a man attempted to hijack the aircraft and fly it to Tripoli. The hijacker drew out a small knife but he was overpowered by four passengers and crew. The aircraft landed at Rome were the hijacker was arrested. One flight attendant was slightly injured during the attempted hijacking.
  • April 25 Bombings Maiduguri, Nigeria: A bomb exploded at a hotel in northeastern Nigeria, killing 3 people and wounding 14 others. A second bomb went off at a cattle market in the town of Maiduguri; it is suspected that the attacks have been perpetrated by the radical Islamic sect Bokko Haram (figuratively, "Western or non-Islamic education is a sin").
  • April 26 Attempted Letter bomb Belfast, Northern Ireland: A latter bomb was sent to Scotland on the 12 April but was sent back to Belfast on the 26 at the National Return Centre. The bomb was defused before it could explode and cuase injury.
  • April 28 Bombing Marrakech, Morocco: A bomb exploded in a cafe in the city of Marrakech killing 17 and wounding 20 people.
  • May

  • May 9 Attempted Bombing Derry, Northern Ireland: A grenade was thrown at PSNI officers during a security alert at Southway in the city of Derry. The officers was talking to two men when the grenade was thrown at them. The grenade failed to explode and no one was injured in the attack. Dissident republicans were blamed for the incident.
  • May 11 Terror plot New York City, United States: Two men planned to blow up a New York synagogue and the Empire State Building, but were arrested by undercover officers when they attempted to buy weapons.
  • May 13 Bombing Charsadda District, Pakistan: Two bombs exploded in Charsadda District killing 98 and wounding 140 people.
  • May 17 Suicide bombing Aktobe, Kazakhstan: A suicide bomber attacked the headquarters of the Kazakhstani security services in the city of Aktobe. The only person killed was the bomber, with two others wounded.
  • May 21 Bombing Tianzhu County, Guizhou, China: A bomb exploded inside a bank in Tianzhu County wounding 49 people.
  • May 21 Bombing Derry, Northern Ireland: A bomb exploded inside a Santander bank in the centre of Derry. No one was killed or injured but the bank was damaged in the blast.
  • May 21 Bombing Abuja, Zaria, Nigeria: Four bombs exploded in northern Nigeria killing 13 and wounding 40 people.
  • May 27 Bike bombing Diyarbakir, Turkey: A bike bomb exploded at a Turkish military housing area in the city of Diyarbakir. No one was killed, but two were wounded in the blast.
  • June

  • June 5 Bombing Peshawar, Pakistan: A bomb exploded at a bus stop in the city of Peshawar, killing 6 people and wounding 10 more.
  • June 11 Bombing Yangon, Burma: A bomb exploded in the men's toilets at a marketplace in the city of Yangon. No one was killed or injured in the blast.
  • June 12 Suicide bombing Peshawar, Pakistan: 34 people were killed and 100 wounded after a suicide bomber attacked the city of Peshawar.
  • June 16 Suicide bombing Abuja, Nigeria: A suicide car bomber attacked the police headquarters in Abuja killing 7.
  • June 21 Suicide bombing Al Diwaniyah, Iraq: 27 people were killed and 30 wounded after a suicide bomber attacked the city of Al Diwaniyah.
  • June 24 Bombing Yangon, Burma A bomb exploded at a house in the city of Yangon. No one was killed or injured in the blast.
  • June 25 Suicide Bombing Azra District, Afghanistan: A suicide car bomber attacked a hospital in the Azra District killing 35 people.
  • June 30 IED Nimruz province, Afghanistan: A roadside bomb exploded next to a bus in Nimruz province killing 20 and wounding 30 people.
  • July

  • July 2 IED Zabul Province, Afghanistan: A roadside bomb exploded in Zabul Province killing 11 people.
  • July 15 Bombing Taji, Iraq: A car bomb and a bomb exploded in the city of Taji killing 35 and wounding 50 people.
  • July 13 Bombing Mumbai, India: Three bombs exploded in the centre of Mumbai killing 26 people and wounding 130 more.
  • July 18 Bombing/shooting Hotan, China: A police station was attacked by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in the city of Hotan, killing 18 and wounding 4 more.
  • July 22 Bombing/Shooting spree Oslo, Utøya, Norway: Anders Behring Breivik set off a car bomb in the city centre of Oslo. Then he opened fire on young Labour Party members on Utøya island, killing 77 people and injuring 96 others.
  • July 23 Attempted bombing Belfast, Northern Ireland: An incendiary bomb was found under a car outside of a football stadium in east Belfast. Homes were evacuated and the bomb was made safe before it could explode and cause damage or injury. It is believed that the stadium was not the target of the attack.
  • July 24 Car bombing Aden, Yemen: Five soldiers were killed and two wounded after a car bomb exploded in the city of Aden.
  • July 26 IED Dublin, Republic of Ireland: A bomb exploded under a car on Thomond Road, Dublin. No one was killed or injured, but the car was destroyed in the blast.
  • July 30-31 Car bombing/stabbing Kashgar, China: A series of busy markets and restaurants were attacked by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in the city of Kashgar, by carbombs and stabbing attacks, killing 23 and wounding 42 people in total.
  • July 31 Pipe Bombing Attempt Lake Koshkonong, Wisconsin, United States: A pipe bomb is found on Lake Koshkonong, Wisconsin. The bomb squad showed up to detonate the bomb. No deaths or injuries occurred.
  • August

  • August 1 Bombing Guwahati, India: A bomb exploded in a market place in the city of Guwahati. The bomb blast killed five and wounded 20 people.
  • August 2 Bombing Cotabato City, Philippines: A bomb exploded in the city of Cotabato on the island of Mindanao. The blast killed two people and wounded 9.
  • August 6 Aircraft shootdown Wardak Province, Afghanistan: A U.S. military Boeing CH-47 Chinook was shot down by the Taliban. All 39 were killed in the attack.
  • August 8 Letter bombing Mexico city, Mexico: A letter bomb exploded in the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City; two people were injured in the blast. Another letter bomb was found at the National Polytechnical Institute but failed to explode. A violent anti-technology group linked to attacks against academics in Europe was responsible for the attack.
  • August 11 Bombing Peshawar, Pakistan: Two suicide bombers attacked police in Peshawar killing seven and wounding 17.
  • August 11 Bombing Antelias, Lebanon: A bomb exploded next to a gas station in Antelias killing two and wounding one person.
  • August 13 Bombing Baghdad, Iraq: A bomb exploded near a cafe in the Jamiaa neighborhood of western Baghdad. The bomb blast killed two people and wounded 13 more.
  • August 14 Bombing Baluchistan province, Pakistan: A roadside restaurant was hit by a bomb blast in Baluchistan province killing 11 and wounding 10.
  • August 14 Suicide bombing Parwan Province, Afghanistan: A car bomb exploded outside the gates of the compound of the governor of Parwan province. Then five suicide bombers attacked the compound. The attack killed 19 and wounded 34 more.
  • August 14 Suicide bombing Tizi Ouzou, Algeria: A suicide bomber exploded outside a police station in the city of Tizi Ouzou. No one was killed, but 29 were wounded in the bombing.
  • August 15 Suicide bombing Kut, Baghdad, Iraq: A series of bombings hit Kut and Baghdad, killing 59 and wounded 64 people.
  • August 17 Bombing Çukurca, Turkey: Two roadside bombs exploded in Çukurca, killing eight Turkish soldiers. The PKK was blamed for the attack.
  • August 18 Bombings, shooting and rocket attack Near Eilat, Israel: A series of cross-border attacks between Israel and Egypt killed 23 and wounded 40.
  • August 19 Suicide bombing Jamrud, Ghundai, Pakistan: A suicide bomber exploded his vest in a packed mosque during Friday prayers in the month of Ramadan near the border area with Afghanistan. According to eyewitness reports the building was packed with more than 300 worshipers when the explosion took place and casualties were heavy. Around 48 people were killed and 100 people were injured.
  • August 22 Attempted Bombing Newry, Northern Ireland: A bomb was left outside a bank on Hill Street in the town of Newry. The PSIN made the bomb safe beofre it could explode and cause damage and injure.
  • August 24 Bombing Navan, Republic of Ireland: A bomb exploded outside the house of an ex-police informer in the town of Navan, County Meath. The man was injured in the blast. The Real IRA are being blamed for the attack.
  • August 26 Car bomb Abuja, Nigeria: A car bomb exploded at the UN Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, killing 23 people. The total number of injured persons is yet to be released.
  • August 28 Suicide bombing Baghdad, Iraq: A suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Baghdad, killing 28 and wounding 30.
  • August 31 Suicide Bombing Grozny, Russia: Two suicide bombers killed eight people including six police officers and wounded 22 after attacking in the city of Grozny.

  • September 2 Suicide car bombing Lakki Marwat, Pakistan: A suicide car bomber exploded near a police checkpost in Lakki Marwat, killing 12 and wounding 35 more.
  • September 3 Car bombing Aden, Yemen: A car bomb exploded at a military checkpoint in the city of Aden. The blast killed five soldiers and wounded eight more.
  • September 7 Bombing Delhi, India: A bomb exploded outside the Delhi High Court in Delhi, killing 14 and wounding 76 people.
  • September 7 Suicide bombing Quetta, Pakistan: Two suicide bombers attacked a top army officer in Quetta, killing 22 and wounding 60 people.
  • September 10 Attempted suicide bombing Gothenburg, Sweden: Four men were arrested on suspicion of trying to bomb the city of Gothenburg.
  • September 11 Truck bombing, rocket attack Bagram, Afghanistan: The Taliban attacked a US military base in Wardak Province. First there was a rocket attack directed at Bagram Airfield, followed by a truck bomb exploding outside the base. At least two Afghan soldiers were killed and scores wounded, including more than 70 American soldiers.
  • September 12 Mass shooting Ar Rutba, Iraq: Suspected al-Qaeda militants set up a fake checkpoint and stopped a bus with Shiite pilgrims travelling near the town of Rutba in Al Anbar Governorate, killing all but 2 of the men in the vehicle. The massacre was similar to incidents that happened during the height of the insurgency in 2006 and 2007. Iraqi Army units searched the desert the next day to find any trace of the attackers.
  • September 13 Bombings, shootings, rocket attacks Kabul, Afghanistan: Taliban fighters staged a coordinated assault on several major targets in the capital Kabul. Several militants set up positions inside a shopping center under construction in the city's embassy district. Gunfire and explosions rocked several parts of the city for the better part of the day and continued well into the night. At least 15 people were confirmed killed (including at least 4 policemen) and more than 20 wounded. This is the third major attack in the capital since June and the most sophisticated assault that the Taliban have attempted so far. It is also the longest-lasting insurgent attack on the capital, ending after more than 20 hours of battle.
  • September 14 Bombings Hamza and Medhatiyah, Iraq: Iraqi insurgents bombed a military bus coming out of the Habaniya military base west of Baghdad, killing at least 2 soldiers and injuring at least 10 others. In the town of Medhatiyah south of the capital, a car bomb exploded in front of a restaurant frequented by security forces, killing at least 13 people. The deadliest attack of the day occured in the southern parts of Iraq near the city of Hilla when a car bomb exploded in front of a popular local restaurant. Initial reports indicate at least 15 people were instantly killed and more than 30 wounded. Additionally, two policemen were shot dead in Baghdad and another was injured.
  • September 14 Bombings Claudy, Northern Ireland: A controlled explosion was carried out on a bomb that was left outside a former British Army doctor's home in the town of Claudy. In another incident a bomb exploded at a police officer's house near Claudy. No one was killed or injured in the attacks but the Real IRA is being blamed for both attacks.
  • September 15 Bombings Aden, Yemen: Two bombs exploded in the city of Aden hitting two security buildings. Two people were killed and two wounded in the blasts.
  • September 15 Bombings Lower Dir District, Pakistan: A bomb exploded during a funeral in Lower Dir District, killing 20 and wounding 45.
  • September 16 Bombing Diyarbakir, Turkey: A bomb exploded next to a police bus in the city of Diyarbakir. Five people were injured in the blast.
  • September 16 Bombing/Pipe bombing attempted Newtownabbey, Derry, Northern Ireland: A bomb was thrown at two PSNI police officers in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. The bomb exploded and injured the officers. The officers were responding to an alarm call at a business premises in the town when the attack happened. Hours later a pipe bomb was found in a car wash in the city of Derry. Dissident republicans were blamed for the attacks.
  • September 16 Bombings Yala, Thailand: Three bombs exploded in the city of Yala, killing four people and wounding 50.
  • September 16 Bombing Sherzad District, Afghanistan: Three people were killed and another two wounded after a bomb exploded at a market in the city of Sherzad.
  • September 17 Bombing Agra, India: Seven people were wounded after a bomb exploded inside a hospital in Agra near the Taj Mahal.
  • September 17 Roadside bomb Ghormach District, Afghanistan: A roadside bomb exploded in Ghormach District, killing 9 people and wounding one more.
  • September 17 Bombing Craigavon, Northern Ireland: The Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on police in Craigavon Co.Armagh.
  • September 19 Suicide car bombing Karachi, Pakistan: A suicide car bomber exploded at the house of Chaudhry Aslam Khan, the chief of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Karachi. 8 officers were killed in the blast but Khan was uninjured in the attack and the house was damaged in the bombing.
  • September 19 Mortar attack/Shooting Caloto, Cauca, Colombia: The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia fired shots and mortars at a police station in the city of Caloto. The attack injured six officers and also wounded two soldiers.
  • September 19 Terror plot Birmingham, England: Seven people were arrested by West Midlands Police in Birmingham and accused of plotting terrorist attacks in the city.
  • September 20 Car bombing Ankara, Turkey: A car bomb exploded in the city of Ankara, killing three and injuring more than 30 other people. At least five of the wounded were in critical condition.
  • September 20 Suicide bombing, assassination Kabul, Afghanistan: A Taliban suicide bomber assassinated former Afghan president and leader of Jamiat-e Islami Burhanuddin Rabbani. He was taking part in peace deal negotiations between the insurgents and other forces, when two Taliban members approached to greet him and at least one of them blew himself up, using explosives hidden in his turban. Reports indicate that four other people were wounded in the attack, including his deputy Mohammed Masoom Stanekzai. This is the seventh assassination of a major political figure and Taliban opponent this year in the country.
  • September 20 Ambush, massacre Mastung, Pakistan: At least 25 Shiite pilgrims were shot to death and 6 more wounded near the city of Quetta by a group of 8 to 10 gunmen who stopped their bus and ordered them off it. Hours after the attack the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group claimed responsibility.
  • September 20 Bombing Ramadi, Iraq: Three bombs exploded outside a police headquarters in the city of Ramadi, killing 3 and wounding 18 more.
  • September 21 Bombing Ankara, Turkey: Three people was killed and 15 wounded after a bomb exploded in the city of Ankara. The PKK is being blamed for the bombing.

  • September 26 Attempted Car bombing Derry, Northern Ireland: A car was stopped on Buncrana Road by police in the city of Derry and they discovered that there was a bomb inside the car. Three men were arrested in connection with the incident. Army bomb experts were called to the scene, the area was cordoned off and the bomb was defused.
  • September 27 Roadside bombing Shindand District, Afghanistan: 16 people were killed after a roadside bomb exploded next to a minibus in Shindand District.
  • September 28 Car bombing Khajalmakhi, Russia: A policeman and seven others were killed after a car bomb exploded in the village of Khajalmakhi in the Republic of Dagestan. The policeman was checking the car when it exploded.
  • September 28 Terror plot Washington, D.C., United States: 26 year old Rezwan Ferdaus was arrested by the FBI for plotting to use C4 and a remote-controlled model of the US Navy's McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II to bomb The Pentagon and the US Capitol. Rezwan Ferdaus had links to al-Qaeda and attempted to deliver bomb making materials for use against US troops in Iraq.
  • September 29 Truck bombing Kirkuk, Iraq: A truck bomb exploded outside a bank in the city of Kirkuk, killing two and wounding 73 more people.
  • September 29 Roadside bomb Herat, Afghanistan: A roadside bomb planted in a motorcycle exploded in the city of Herat. Two officers inside a nearby police car died along with one bystander. 10 more people were wounded by the bomb blast. The officers were female and the attack marks the first time that female officers have been killed in Afghanistan.

  • October 1 Bombing Mansehra, Pakistan: A bomb exploded near a police van in the city of Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The blast killed 5 officers and wounded 20 more.
  • October 1 Bombing Tripoli, Lebanon: Four people were wounded after a bomb exploded outside a mosque in the city of Tripoli.
  • October 1 Bombing Damascus, Syria: A bomb exploded in a neighborhood of Damascus killing 3 Syrian military officers and wounding four more.
  • October 1 Terror plot Arar, Saudi Arabia: Seven people were arrested and charged with plotting to suicide bomb Arar Domestic Airport in the city of Arar.
  • October 2 Bombing Battagram, Pakistan: A bomb exploded next to a police convoy of three vehicles near the city of Battagram, killing four and wounding 15 others.

  • October 3 Car bomb Miranda, Cauca, Colombia: The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia set off a car bomb in the town of Miranda. No one was killed or injured in the the blast, but it caused damage to buildings and homes in the area of the town.
  • October 3 Suicide car bombing Kizilyurt, Russia: A suicide car bomber exploded as a police minivan passed through the town of Kizilyurt in Republic of Dagestan. The blast killed the two officers in the minivan.
  • October 4 Shooting Quetta, Pakistan: A gunman attacked a bus carrying Shia Muslims near the city of Quetta, killing 13 and wounding four more people.
  • October 4 Suicide truck bombing Mogadishu, Somalia: A truck exploded outside a government ministry building in the city of Mogadishu. The bombing killed at least 139 and wounded at least another 93 people. The group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the bombing; al-Shabab withdrew its forces from Mogadishu back in August.
  • October 5 Suicide bombing Kemer, Turkey: A suicide bomber exploded outside a police station in the city of Kemer. The blast caused damage to the building and cars in the area. The bomb blast killed one and wounded two others.
  • October 5 Bombing Taji, Iraq: A bomb exploded next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Taji, injuring four people.
  • October 7 Bombing/Shooting Baghdad, Iraq A number of bombs and shooting attacks in the city of Baghdad killed seven and wounded 39 people
  • October 8 Bombing Aden, Yemen: A bomb exploded outside a police station headquarters in the city of Aden, injuring at least 9 people.
  • October 8 Car bombing/Rocket attacks Paktika Province, Afghanistan: A car bomb exploded and 22 rockets were fired at Margah base, a US Army base in Paktika Province and rockets were also fired at the Tillman, Boris and Orgun-E bases in Paktika Province. No one was killed or wounded in the attacks.
  • October 9 Bombing/Shooting Maiduguri, Nigeria: A bomb exploded and shots were fired at a military patrol in the Gwange area of the city of Maiduguri. There have been no reports of anyone killed or injured in the attack.
  • October 9 Pipe bombings Zamboanga City, Philippines: 11 people were injured after two pipe bombs exploded in the city of Zamboanga.
  • October 10 Bombings Kunar province, Afghanistan: Two bombs exploded in Dangam district of Kunar province, killing 6 and injuring 4 more people.
  • October 10 Bombings Phentsholing, Bhutan: Two bombs exploded in the city of Phentsholing. No one was killed or injured in the blasts.

  • October 10 Bombing Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovo: A bomb exploded under a United Nations worker's car inside the UN building in the city of Kosovska Mitrovica. No one was killed or wounded in the blast.
  • October 10 Roadside bomb Beni Amrane, Algeria: Two people in a car were injured after a roadside bomb exploded near a railway crossing in the town of Beni Amrane. The roadside bomb was planned by terrorists who were trying to kill police and military in the country.
  • October 10 Bombings Baghdad, Iraq: Three bomb exploded in the city of Baghdad, killing 10 and wounding at least 18 people.
  • October 10-11 Bombing attempt/Derailment attempt Berlin, Germany: On 10 October a fire bomb exploded and another bomb was found on the Hamburg to Berlin railway line in the city of Berlin, followed by another bomb being found on another railway line in the city the day after. The bombs were designed to derail trains and a left wing group calling itself Hekla Reception Committee said it was responsible. No one was killed or injured in the attacks.
  • October 11 Bombing attempt Dublin, Republic of Ireland: A bomb was made safe after it was found under a car on Eglinton Road in an area of Dublin called Donnybrook. No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb.
  • October 11 Bombing/shooting Bhanjanagar, India: Several men on bikes threw a bomb inside a hotel and opened fire at a temple and a bus stop. At least two people were injured in the attack.
  • October 11 Terror plot Washington, D.C., United States: Two men from Iran were arrested over a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington and to bomb the Saudi embassy in the city. Later in the day, the US government issued a worldwide alert in anticipation of other attacks.
  • October 11 Ambush Al-Fashir, Sudan: An ambush killed three United Nations peacekeepers in the Zam Zam camp near the city of Al-Fashir.
  • October 12 Suicide car bombings, shootings, IED attacks Baghdad, Iraq: At least 28 people were killed and more than 85 wounded in a string of suicide car bombings across Baghdad. Many of the dead were police officers and at least one of the attacks took place in Hurriya, a stronghold of Muqtada al-Sadr and a heavily protected part of the city, surrounded by blast walls and checkpoints. Other attacks took place in Mosul, Kerbala and several other towns in the south. At least 10 people were killed and 8 more injured in these incidents.

  • October 13 Bombing Dublin, Republic of Ireland: A bomb exploded under a 4x4 vehicle on Holy Cross Avenue in the city of Dublin. No one was killed or injured in the blast, but the bomb caused damage to the car and the house next to it. No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb.
  • October 13 Rocket attack Maysan province, Iraq: Five rockets were fired at a military base in Maysan province. No one was killed, but 3 US soldiers were wounded in the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
  • October 13 Bombing attempt/Derailment attempt: Berlin, Germany: A bomb was found on a railway line in Berlin, the 16th to be found in the city in the past four days. The left wing group Hekla Reception Committee said it was responsible for planting the bomb which was meant to derail high speed trains.
  • October 13 Roadside bombings Baghdad, Iraq: A string of roadside bombs exploded close to a popular coffee house in the mainly Shiite district of Sadr City. At least 18 people were killed and almost 50 injured in the bombings, which were the third major attack in the capital this week alone.
  • October 13 Bombing Derry City, UK: The RIRA claimed responsibility for planting a small explosive device outside the UK City of culture offices in Derry. The small device caused substanial damage to the office and surrounding buildings in what was the second attack on the UK city of culture offices in 9 months.
  • October 13 Bombing Sofia, Bulgaria: A bomb blew up the car of a popular Bulgarian journalist late on Thursday in Sofia, coinciding with a visit of European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and three members of the Commission to the Balkan country.
  • October 15 Bombing Spin Boldak district, Afghanistan: A bomb exploded in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, killing three police officers and one child. Three officers and two people were wounded in the blast.
  • October 15 Attempted Bombings Belfast, Northern Ireland: Two bombs were found and defused on Donegall Avenue in south Belfast. Homes were evacuated and no one has claimed responsibility for the bombs.

  • November 2 Arson attack Peshawar, Pakistan: A car bomb exploded next to a plice checkponit in the nortwest of Peshawar, Pakistan wouding 13 people.
  • November 5 Bombing/Shooting (see 2011 Damaturu attacks) Damaturu, Nigeria: More than 100 people were killed (Possibly as high as 150) and hundreds of people injured in joint bomb and gun attacks in Damaturu, Nigeria. Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Several churches were also attacked.
  • November 6 Suicide bombing Baghdad, Iraq: At least 10 people were killed when simultaneous bombs were detonated near Shurja shopping district.
  • November 6 Suicide bombing Baghlan Province, Afghanistan: At least 7 people were killed and 15 injured after a suicide bomber attacked at a mosque after prayers for Eid al-Adha.
  • November 11-12 Hijacking Sea of Marmara, Turkey: A ferry was hijacked by a lone hijacker in the Sea of Marmara west of Istanbul on the 11th. The ferry departed the port town of Izmit. On the 12th Turkish forces stormed the ferry near the port town of Silivri 12 hours into the hijacking. The lone hijacker was shot dead, there was no other fatalities or injures. The hiacjker is belived to a rebel from the PKK.
  • November 12 Suicide bombing/shooting Taraz, Kazakhstan: A weapons store was raided by a robber who initially killed a security guard, which escalated into a pursuit resulting in deaths of police officers. Once apprehended, the robber blew himself up, claiming more victims. The radical movement group Jund al-Khilafah has claimed responsibility.
  • November 14 Bombing Myitkyina, Myanmar: A bomb exploded inside a government office in the town of Myitkyina. The blast killed ten and wounded 23 people.
  • November 15 Bombing Athens, Greece: A homemade bomb exploded outside the Greek Deputy Minister's Office in the city of Athens. The blast caused minor damage to the building. No one was killed or injured in the bombing. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
  • November 16 Car Bomb Hamrun, Malta: A car bomb exploded in Hamrun, Malta at around 9:30 a.m injuring 3 people. This case is the most serious since a bomb exploded in Transport Malta offices at Sa Maison injuring a consultant last December and a letter bomb injured a man in Qormi a year earlier.
  • November 16 Car Bomb Baghdad, Iraq: A car bomb exploded outisde the main gate to the headquarters of the US-led coalition in the city of Baghdad. 20 people were killed and another 60 wounded in the blast.
  • November 21 Terror plot New York city, United States: Jose Pimentel, a 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic plotted to explode several pipe bombs in the city of New York.
  • November 22 Bombing Mardan, Pakistan: A bomb exploded at a girls school in the city Mardan, Pakistan. The bomb blast killed a policeman and wounded eight other people.
  • November 24 Ambush Farah province, Afghanistan: An attack on a Nato supply convoy in Bakwah district, Farah province, killed ten and wounded ten more. No group has claimed responsibility.
  • November 24 Bombings Basra, Iraq: Three bombs exploded in the southern city Basra, Iraq. The bombing killed 19 and wounded 65 others.
  • November 26 Bombings Baghdad, Iraq: Sixteen people were killed and twenty wounded after three bombs exploded in the centre of Baghdad.
  • November 28 Suicide Car Bombings Taji and Baghdad, Iraq: A suicide car bomber attacked the central gate of a prison in the town of Taji near Baghdad, killing 19 and injuring at least 22. Meanwhile in the capital itself, another car bomber successfully penetrated all but one of the Green Zone security checkpoints and blew up his car inside a parking lot next to the building housing the Iraqi parliament. At least two guards were killed in the explosion and two others were injured, including the parliamentary speaker. Iraqi officials later speculated that this was a failed assassination attempt against a high-ranking politician, possibly Nouri al Maliki himself.
  • November 28 Bombing Zamboanga City, Philippines: Three people was killed and 27 wounded after a bomb exploded at a hotel in the Zamboanga City.
  • November 30 Suicide Bombing Imphal, India: A suicide bomber attack the city of Imphal as a festival was taking place in the city. The only person killed was the bomber but injures at this time are unknown.
  • November 30 Suicide Bombing Mogadishu, Somalia: A suicide bomber attacked the Somalia's army headquarters in the city of Mogadishu. The bombing killed four soldiers and wounded 12 more.

  • December 1 Bombings, shootings Khalis, Taji and Buhriz, Iraq: A car bomb in the mostly Shiite town of Khalis killed at least 10 people and injured 25 more. In Buhriz insurgents stormed the houses of Sahwa militiamen and killed eight men as well as injuring five more. In the city of Taji the Iraqi environment minister narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a roadside bomb exploded as his convoy was passing by - at least four people were injured, including one of his personal guards. Earlier in the day seven policemen were injured nearby as they were trying to defuse roadside bombs. At least four other people were killed in random attacks in and around the Sunni Triangle, including an influential Sheikh that was kidnapped from his home a few days prior.
  • December 2 Suicide Bombing Mohammad Agha District, Afghanistan: A suicide truck bomber attacked a U.S and NATO base in Mohammad Agha District. The blast only killed the bomber and 84 people were wounded in the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing.
  • December 3 Bombings, shootings Mosul, Baghdad and Kirkuk, Iraq: At least four people were killed in separate incidents in the northern town of Mosul. Roadside bomb attacks in Iskandariya, Baghdad and Baqubah left three dead and at least 10 injured, and separate bombings in Kirkuk killed at least one person and wounded 12 more.
  • December 3 Bombing Itahari, Nepal: A bomb exploded in the town of Itahari as police and traffic police were on duty. The blast wounded four people and a police officer.
  • December 4 Bombing Manama, Bahrain: A bomb exploded on a bus outside the British Embassy in the city of Manama. No one was killed or injured in the blast
  • December 5 Car bomb/Bombings Baghdad, Hilla, Iraq: A car bomb exploded in the city of Hilla, Iraq as Shia pilgrims were passing the northern side of the city. At least 16 people were killed in this first explosion, followed later by two more attacks in Baghdad. A total of 30 people were killed during the day across the country.
  • December 6 Suicide Car Bombing Mogadishu, Somalia: Somali Police stopped a car at a checkpoint in the city of Mogadishu,Somalia, when the driver detonated his bomb inside the car. The blast killed one police officer and five people.
  • December 6 Bike/Suicide Bombing (see 2011 Afghanistan shrine bombings) Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber attacked a Kabul shrine killing at least 48 Shia Muslims. A bicycle bomb exploded outside a mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing 4 more people, followed by another explosion in Kandahar that killed three. The Taliban denied carrying out the attacks and strongly condemned them, while the US government confirmed that one of its citizens was killed in the Kabul attack. The Afghan government placed the blame on foreign Sunni groups, possibly from Pakistan.
  • December 6 Truck Bombing La Guajira, Colombia: A truck bomb exploded outside a police station in the town of La Guajira. A person on a motorbike was killed when the bomb exploded and 18 people were also wounded in the blast.
  • December 6 Roadside bomb Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan: A powerful roadside bomb destroyed a van full of people as they were travelling from Lashkar Gah to Sangin District in the southern part of the country. Most of the victims were women and children.
  • December 9 Parcel bomb Rome, Italy:A parcel bomb sent by the FAI to the Italian tax office Equitalia injured the director Marco Cuccanga after a glass table sent shards into his hands and eyes.. A similar parcel bomb was sent to the chief executive of Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, but was intercepted and secured. A note by the FAI in the Frankfurt parcel bomb stated three bombs were dispatched.
  • December 9 Roadside bomb Tyre, Lebanon: A roadside bomb detonated near a UNIFIL convoy, injuring five French troops and two bystanders. This is the third major incident along the tense border with Israel this year, after similar attacks in May and July that left six Italians and six Frenchmen wounded. Several days after the attack the French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe held an interview with Radio France Internationale in which he blamed the Syrian government and its "armed wing in Lebanon" Hezbollah for being behind it.
  • December 9 Suicide bombing Ghaziabad, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber killed the Ghaziabad district police chief and five others in the eastern Kunar Province. The attack took place outside the gates of a local mosque after Friday prayers. The dead included an intelligence service official and two policemen. At least nine people were injured in the incident. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the bombing.
  • December 13 Roadside bombs, shootings Baghdad, Mosul and Fallujah, Iraq: A number of attacks took place in Iraq, including an IED explosion close to the Baghdad Hotel that killed two policemen and injured five other people. Several shootings took place in Mosul and in Fallujah gunmen attacked a minibus carrying judges at a police checkpoint. Two policemen and a civilian were killed and five others were wounded, including three local judges.
  • December 14 Car bombings, roadside bombs, shootings Baghdad, Mosul, Kirkuk and Tal Afar, Iraq: A string of attacks across northern and western Iraq killed at least four people and wounded more than 40 on Thursday as US troops were preparing to vacate their last two bases within the country. The worst attack of the day took place in the town of Tal Afar, where insurgents blew up a tanker near a busy street and later detonated a car bomb as onlookers gathered nearby. At least 3 were killed and 35 injured in this incident alone. Several shootings took place in Mosul, considered to be the last urban stronghold of Sunni insurgents.
  • December 14 A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up outside a police brigade unit in Iraq's southern oil port city of Basra on Monday, killing five people and wounding 15.
  • December 14 Militants attacked the provincial council building in Baqubah, setting off a car bomb and then laying siege to the building. Eight people were killed and at least 25 wounded before Iraqi forces regained control. At least 6 people were killed in other attacks across the country
  • December 15 Eight people have been killed and four others injured in a suicide attack in Afghanistan’s north-eastern Kapisa province.
  • December 16 A suicide bomber drove his car into the parking lot of a police HQ in central Abuja after picking up a traffic officer who guided him to the spot. At least 30 cars were destroyed in the large explosion and it took several hours to extinguish the fire.
  • December 18 T hree suicide bombers attacked a police station in central Kabul near the city's biggest open air market. At least one of them managed to detonate his explosives, killing nine people including two policemen. The two other militants were shot by security forces after a short battle.
  • December 20 At least six people were killed and almost 20 wounded in a series of shootings and bombings across the country. These included an IED attack on a French embassy convoy which left seven people injured.
  • December 21 Suspected Islamic militants killed two policemen and a village chief in the southern parts of the country.
  • December 21 At least 27 people were killed and almost 40 wounded after two suicide bombers drove their cars to the front gate of the governor's compound in the southern city of Diwaniyah. The governor escaped injury as he was just about to leave his offices. In other attacks across the country at least 8 people were killed, including five in a restaurant bombing in the city of Mussayab.
  • December 23 At least 34 people were killed and more than 82 wounded after three bombs exploded at a market and near a Shiite mosque in Baghdad. Fourteen people were killed and at least 16 wounded in other attacks across the country, including a bomb attack against a police patrol in the capital that killed 10 officers.
  • December 24 Four explosions hit three different cities in Burma.
  • December 25 Ten people were killed and 24 others wounded when a bicycle bomb went off in a busy bazaar in northern Afghanistan.
  • December 25 At least 35 people have been killed in a suicide car bombing at a medical clinic in eastern Afghanistan.
  • December 26 Authorities in Nigeria have said that three separate bombs explosions in the country's northeast have killed at least 25 people and wounded 12 others.
  • December 27 Missile strikes from two US drones killed at least 21 suspected militants in Pakistan’s South Waziristan on Monday.
  • December 28 At least 21 people, including the nine suicide bombers, are reported to have been killed after the Hotel Inter-Continental in the Afghan capital, Kabul, came under attack by gunmen who managed to penetrate several rings of security.
